VED Low-carbon, Energy-efficient Drones in Lapland

The project is part of a broader research project that focuses on providing professional drone testing equipment and sensors for testing and evaluation in a variety of practical pilot experiments.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute aims to find more energy-efficient and ecological solutions, especially for the Arctic transport environment, through drone-based monitoring. The project identifies the control functions and routines where an autonomous drone could assist in maintenance operations and autonomous monitoring. Investigate drone usage in traffic monitoring and support for intelligent traffic as an accurate measurement instrument. Drone supports the Meteorological Institute's research weather stations around them, conducting weather observations outside the area affected by the weather station, verifying its findings against the weather station observations. The drones automatically operate in conjunction with the road weather station using automatic telecommunication stations, which allow repeated automatic surveillance routines around the road weather station as well as surveillance flights between the road weather stations.
