Research Areas
According to the EU drone strategy, the development of the drone industry and manned electric aircraft should contribute to the EU's green and digital transition. Drones are already being used for deliveries in many countries, and the first passenger transportation by drones is expected in the EU in the near future. It is crucial for the EU to maintain its strategic independence in this field.
The initial Innovative Air Mobility (IAM) operations related to logistics are anticipated to take place using manned eVTOL (electrical Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft. IAM operations are likely to be conducted on similar platforms in the future, but with remote control initially and eventually fully autonomous.
The European Commission has demonstrated its willingness to strengthen the EU's role as a geopolitical actor with a clear objective of building a stronger and more capable EU in the field of security and defence.
The drone ecosystem includes a security dimension (including cybersecurity) to achieve technological synergy between the civilian, security, and defence sectors.
Achieving synergies between these sectors is a crucial factor for the competitiveness of the European drone ecosystem and for the overall resilience of the Union.

Project Portfolio
The Location Innovation Hub (LIH) is a centre of excellence in location information coordinated by the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute. LIH services are produced in conjunction with a partner network.
The aim of the project is to utilise drone-related technology to increase the business potential of companies and to increase the efficiency of the activities of public stakeholders in Northern Ostrobothnia. The project will carry out rapid experiments using drones and related peripherals and tools, with the aim of creating new products and services.
Flying Forward 2020 is a three-year collaborative research project that will develop a new Urban Air Mobility (UAM) ecosystem aligned with the Digital Government Transformation (DGT) of European countries.
The UCNDrone project will create a network of ten universities to strengthen training and research on unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and to respond to changes in society and work.
The Finnish UAV Ecosystem (FUAVE) supports the development of Finnish knowledge base and business related to unmanned aviation.
VED is an investment project managed by the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (OAMK) and is part of the Arctic Drone Labs ecosystem. The project will build a drone solution piloting and testing environment for companies and other organisations in Northern Ostrobothnia.
